Live television can be an anxiety-inducing experience, especially since there is no room for editing or redoing scenes during a live broadcast.

During a recent episode of “The Sheng Siong Show,” Singaporean actress Denise Camillia Tan, who was nominated as one of the top ten female nominees in 2021’s Artiste Star Awards, found herself in an amusingly embarrassing situation while hosting the program.

Rather than trying to conceal her mistake, Denise took to TikTok to share the incident, turning it into a lighthearted moment that resonated with viewers.

Slipped Up While Hosting “The Sheng Siong Show”

In a recent episode of the top-rated variety show “The Sheng Siong Show” on 27 May 2023, up-and-coming actress Denise Camillia Tan, joined by co-host Dasmond Koh, encountered an unexpected twist.

While engaging with a caller named Nicholas, they were surprised to hear a female voice on the other end of the line.

The call’s poor audio quality made it challenging for Denise and Dasmond to comprehend the caller’s words, leading to confusion.

However, seemingly in a moment of realisation, Denise mistakenly replied, “Are you his nai nai?” assuming the caller was Nicholas’ grandmother.

With his sharp hearing and extensive experience hosting the show since 2007, Dasmond corrected her, clarifying that the caller had simply asked, “Who’s on the line?

The audience promptly erupted in laughter, and Denise gracefully joined in, accepting her comical blunder with poise.

Gained Positive Response After Posting Clip on TikTok

Given Denise’s recent role as the replacement for the long-standing co-host, Kym Ng, it is understandable that she might make a few mistakes while hosting.

As such, instead of letting herself be consumed by embarrassment or hiding her blunder, Denise took a different approach.

On 29 May 2023, she shared the amusing incident with her TikTok followers, playfully labelling it as an “epic moment.”

To her delight, the TikTok video quickly gained traction, accumulating over 327,000 views and 18,000 likes.

Surpassing the popularity of her other videos, the clip received comments from delighted viewers who expressed that her videos brought laughter to their lives.

Notably, the adorable clip also caught the attention of fellow celebrities such as former Night Owl Cinematics (NOC) talent Rao Zi Jie and Star Awards’ Best Rising Star winner Das DD

As viewers watched the clip repeatedly, viewers also expressed their ongoing amusement, finding the incident funnier with each viewing.

The lightheartedness and joy that Denise’s video brought to her followers further lifted her spirits and reassured her that her ability to embrace the mishap resonated positively with her audience.

Finding Humour In Imperfections

While Denise’s mishearing blunder on “The Sheng Siong Show” may have initially been mortifying, her decision to share the incident on TikTok transformed it into a viral sensation.

Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that more significant mishaps had occurred on live television, such as when Channel NewsAsia presenter Ms Julie Yoo fainted before her turn to host Asia Tonight in July 2022.

Meanwhile, ABC News has encountered multiple mishaps during their live programs but took a similar sporting attitude towards these mistakes, compiling them and turning them into a YouTube video.

These instances remind us to embrace our mistakes and find humour in our imperfections.

Denise’s experience is also a valuable lesson: laughter can often be the best remedy for an embarrassing moment, even on live television.
